The 49ers (2-5) travel to Ericcson Stadium for a 1:00 ET kickoff against the Carolina Panthers (3-4), the second meeting of the year for the NFC West rivals after the 38-22 Carolina win at 3Com in Week 2. Steve Beuerlein remains the Panthers' starter under George Seifert. Wesley Walls is back from the high ankle sprain that limited him in October; Muhsin Muhammad has caught at least seven passes in five of the first seven games.[1][2]
49ers at Carolina Panthers
Pregame
Two games into the season Steve Beuerlein threw for 364 yards at 3Com and George Seifert walked out with the win. Sunday at Ericcson Stadium is the rematch the Panthers' schedule has been pointing toward since the opener. The 49ers' film of the first meeting tells the staff Sunday's game plan needs to be different at the line of scrimmage. Beuerlein got a clean pocket on more than 80 percent of his dropbacks in Week 2.
Week 8 begins a stretch where the NFC's wild-card race begins to thin out. The Rams sit at 6-1. The Vikings 7-0. The Jets 7-1. The Bucs at 5-2 hold the NFC's third spot. Around the league the early conversation is the Vikings' undefeated start and the Rams' first loss in St. Louis last Sunday to the Chiefs. The Sunday-night game is Pittsburgh at Tennessee; the Monday-night game is Oakland at Denver.
Through seven games the 49ers sit at 2-5 with a minus 26 point differential. Garcia is on pace for 4,300 passing yards and 28 touchdown passes, both 49ers' single-season records if the production holds. Owens is on pace for 100 catches and 1,400 yards. Carolina is 3-4 with Beuerlein averaging 285 passing yards per game and 6.8 yards per attempt. Muhammad is on pace for 100 catches. Vegas opens the 49ers as 3-point road underdogs.

Recap
Steve Beuerlein threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns, Muhsin Muhammad caught 9 for 127 and the Panthers beat the 49ers 34-16 at Ericcson Stadium to drop San Francisco to 2-6. Jeff Garcia went 25 of 39 for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Charlie Garner had a career receiving day, catching 7 for 112 to go with 87 rushing yards on 10 carries. Wesley Walls caught two touchdowns.[1][2]
Charlie Garner had the kind of afternoon that, in a parallel universe with a different defensive front, anchors a road win. Eighty-seven rushing yards on ten carries. One hundred and twelve receiving yards on seven catches. Two hundred yards from scrimmage. The 49ers lost 34-16 because the defense surrendered three Beuerlein touchdowns in the first thirty minutes and went into halftime down three scores.
Mariucci's adjustments at the line of scrimmage did not produce more pressure on Beuerlein. The Panthers' starting quarterback had time to step into every throw he wanted to attempt. Muhsin Muhammad had nine catches by the half. Wesley Walls scored two of the three first-half touchdowns. The 49ers' defensive secondary, on the field for the bulk of the seventy possessions, surrendered a third-and-fourteen conversion that turned into the second Walls touchdown.
Panthers 34, 49ers 16. Margin: minus 18. Record: 2-6, minus 44 differential. • Garner: 10 carries for 87; 7 catches for 112 (career single-game high in receiving yards). • Garcia: 25-of-39 for 307, 2 TDs, 1 INT. • Owens: 6 catches for 96, 1 TD. • Rice: 3 catches for 35, 1 TD. • Beuerlein: 28-of-44 for 309, 3 TDs (second straight 300-yard game against SF). • Muhammad: 9 catches for 127. • Walls: 2 receiving TDs. • Quarter scoring: SF 0-3-13-0; CAR 7-17-7-3.
A 34-16 road loss in Charlotte. The 49ers fall to 2-6 heading into the bye.
How it unfolded
Carolina opened with a 7-play touchdown drive ending in the first Wesley Walls touchdown. The 49ers responded with a Richey field goal to make it 7-3. The Panthers added a second-quarter Walls touchdown and a Beuerlein-to-Muhammad 24-yard score to lead 21-3. A Stephen Davis short touchdown made it 28-3 before halftime. The third quarter opened with a Garcia 19-yard touchdown to Owens to cut it to 28-10, and a Beasley touchdown grab pushed it to 28-16. Carolina answered with a fourth-quarter field goal and a closing John Kasay 32-yarder to seal the 34-16 final.
The turning point
The second-quarter Walls touchdown. With the 49ers down 7-3 and the defense facing third-and-fourteen from the 49ers 22, Beuerlein found Walls on a corner route. The 14-3 cushion became 21-3 on the next Carolina possession after a 49ers three-and-out. The afternoon was effectively decided before the halftime gun.
By the numbers
Garcia 25-of-39 for 307 and two touchdowns; his fourth consecutive 300-yard passing day. Garner the full-spectrum afternoon: 87 on 10 carries (8.7 ypc) and 112 on 7 catches; 200 yards from scrimmage. Owens 6 catches for 96 and a score. Rice 3 catches for 35 with a touchdown. Beuerlein 28-of-44 for 309 with three touchdowns; his second consecutive 300-yard passing day against the 49ers in 2000. Muhammad 9 catches for 127; Walls two scores.
